Oviedo Citizens in Action is a non-profit organization officially founded in 1969 during the Civil Rights Era, but members were active as early as 1951. At the time, it served as a way of communicating the needs of the Black community with city leaders.
The founders worked with the city to improve health, education, and living conditions for members of the community. They also worked to desegregate local businesses, help increase voter registration, and connect members of the community to assistance programs.
While significant progress has been made over the last 50+ years, disparities in our community persist, and we are committed to addressing these challenges. We remain dedicated to advocating for positive change and ensuring equitable opportunities exist for everyone in our community.
We invite you to get involved with us as we work together to serve and strengthen our Oviedo community!
Mission Statement
Our mission is to amplify underrepresented voices, foster civic engagement, educate, and empower individuals to become informed, active participants within our community. We are dedicated to honoring our legacy of advancing equality and creating opportunities for all citizens of Oviedo.
